Sapporo Together: Designing Sustainable Community Interaction (Open Class of Global Advanced Course I)
Join us for the final presentations of Global Advanced Course I, part of Nitobe College’s Honors Program and presented in collaboration with Hokkaido University’s 150th Anniversary Project.
Over the past semester, students have applied systems design thinking to address a challenge identified by the City of Sapporo: promoting sustainable interaction between foreign residents and local communities. This work responds to concrete barriers documented in Sapporo’s 2024 foreign resident survey: communication anxieties, limited contact across cultural lines, and declining intent to remain in the city.
Rather than proposing one-off events or top-down interventions, students have designed systems-informed solutions that map the actual relationships, institutions, and practices shaping community connection. Each proposal meets three rigorous criteria: effectiveness (showing clear implementation and impact), sustainability (creating models communities can maintain independently), and feasibility (launching with realistic budgets and resources).
In this interactive English session, student teams will present their findings and recommendations. Their work moves beyond individual initiatives to address the systemic barriers that prevent neighbourhoods from building durable relationships across language, culture, and institutional structures.
