About

Come and join “Independent, Not Isolated,” the final poster session of Global Advanced Course I, a course in the Nitobe College Honors Program, presented as part of Hokkaido University’s 150th Anniversary Project.

Sapporo’s population is ageing, and its long winters shape the daily lives of many older residents. How can the city help older residents stay independent and connected in every season? Graduate students took on that question as their research challenge over eight weeks.

Working in teams drawn from different fields, students looked beneath the surface of the problem to find its root causes. They turned what they found into new questions, built simple prototypes, and tested them with residents.

From those tests, each team weighed who would gain from its idea and who would pay for it. Each team has built that work into a single proposal on a single poster.

This session is presented in poster format, with each team sharing its proposal in English. Stop by, ask questions, and join the conversation about how Sapporo can keep its older residents independent and connected all year round.
